Northfields Ambassador Project

BY MUZAINA 9V

The Alperton Summer Festival is an exciting new festival due to be held this July, organised by the Northfields project. This has brought about some excellent opportunities for students at Alperton Community School as they have the chance to be selected to be an ambassador for the school in which they will be helping to contribute to the festival.

During this festival many competitions will be held. Students will help run and present the wonderful 2018 Alperton Summer Festival. This is a great way for students to experience and show their skills in media, art, design technology and drama. In the Easter break they will be creating posters and flyers in workshops for the event.

Twelve students across different year groups, for a variety of departments in the school, will be nominated to become the official Alperton Ambassadors. Being on the youth panel will allow them to experience many new challenges and learn new skills, as they will receive training by Northfields. This is a great opportunity to be a part of something that will have a positive impact on the school, students and the community.

Northfields are a company working on a major new development along Beresford Avenue, near to the upper site. They are planning on building lots of new houses and community spaces to help regenerate the area.  We asked the representatives of Northfields, who have been informing us about the project in assemblies, why they feel is it such a great project to be involved in.

1.    In what ways do you think this project will help the school?
The aim of the project as a whole is to get the voices of the young people of Alperton and the Alperton Community School heard in their local community, especially with regards to designing activities for the 2018 Alperton Summer Festival which will showcase their skills and passions and everything that is great about this community. The Alperton Ambassadors will be the dedicated panel that will represent and support their peers in achieving this.

2.    What will students achieve through this project?
Selected students from a number of key school departments will be able to co-design activities that they would like to run and present at the Festival. The Alperton Ambassadors will be trained up and empowered to facilitate the co-design workshops as well as the advertising campaign to get as many people from the local community to see their work as possible!

3.    How will this project benefit the community as a whole?
Future Northfields is also running a number of other initiatives in the area, within other schools but also cultural organisations, which aim to get as many people from the community to come together and share their vision and ideas for the Festival. What we ultimately want is for this Festival to create stronger links across the whole of the Alperton community and to ensure that all individual cultures and heritage are represented and celebrated.

Make sure you speak to your teachers about getting involved.

The deadline for the art competition, in which students get to design their dream summer festival, is Friday 16th March. Students have already been attending lunchtime clubs to work on their designs. We’re looking forward to finding out who the winner is and to see the best designs.

Keep an eye out for updated stories about this project and the experiences of the selected ambassadors.
