The life of Pi!

This year’s winner at Alperton Community School lower-site was Najma from 8X. She managed to recite an impressive 63 numbers!

Pie day is celebrated all around the world on March 14th and is always a very successful event in the school calendar. The official website, www.piday.org, defines Pi as “the Greek symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant - ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter – which is approximately 3.14159.” For this competition students have to see how many numbers after the decimal they can remember. No easy task!

We have been celebrating this day in Alperton for over 5 years. The reason why it is such a success at our school is because students love the idea of being able to memorise numbers to show off their skills. Miss. New told us why she likes Pi day - “I like to mix up my lessons when it comes to Pi day because it helps the students to learn where Pi day came from and it also makes it a competition.” A student also gave their reason for why they enjoy getting involved in the completion -  “The reason why I like Pi day at Alperton is because although I am not very good at maths I like to memorise things which is why I took part.” It is a testament to the maths department, who were the 2017 TES School Awards winners for Maths Team of the Year, and their ability to engage all types of learners and get them involved in Pi day.
